Often policies and procedures are created in response to a specific incidents or requests with the result that they rarely knit together and can even be contradictory. The information in these ad hoc documents can be valuable to the organisation but the absence of a common structure can lead to confusion – there are differences between policies and procedures however it is not uncommon to read a document that starts “this policy is a procedure”!
